Malaysia, Japan Expand Energy Security Cooperation
The discussions took place during a meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where both sides described the talks as productive and wide-ranging.
Anwar highlighted several areas of cooperation, including maritime security, defense collaboration, economic development, energy transition, and strategic industries. He also emphasized growing partnership in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, and supply chain resilience.
He noted that Malaysia is positioning itself as a regional hub for semiconductor and digital technologies, and expressed openness to further collaboration in securing critical mineral resources and strengthening global supply networks.
A major outcome of the talks was an energy agreement involving Malaysia’s state energy company Petronas and Japan’s JERA, under which Malaysia will supply up to 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually for 20 years beginning in 2028. The deal is part of broader efforts by Japan to diversify its energy imports amid global market volatility linked in part to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The two countries also signed an agreement to enhance coast guard cooperation, aimed at strengthening maritime security and supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region amid shifting regional power dynamics.
